About InPerspective Ministries
Stewarding the enduring teaching legacy of Dr. Harry L. Reeder III for a global audience.
In Memoriam
1948 – 2023
Dr. Harry L. Reeder III was a pastor, teacher, author, and mentor whose ministry shaped generations of Christian leaders across the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) and far beyond. Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, Harry — known as "Ike" until his early twenties — came to faith in Christ on the day of a family friend's funeral in December 1969, when an elder named Harold Jones helped him understand the assurance of salvation. That conversion redirected the entire trajectory of his life. After completing studies at Covenant College and earning his M.Div. from Westminster Theological Seminary (and later his D.Min. from Reformed Theological Seminary), he was ordained in the PCA and went on to lead Pinelands Presbyterian Church in Miami before answering the call in 1983 to replant a struggling church in Charlotte that would become Christ Covenant Church. Under his ministry, Christ Covenant grew from 36 members meeting in a double-wide trailer to a thriving congregation of more than 2,500 members by 1999.
In 1999, Dr. Reeder was called to succeed Dr. Frank Barker as Senior Pastor of Briarwood Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, Alabama, where he served faithfully for 23 years. Under his leadership, Briarwood deepened its commitments to global missions, evangelism, and church planting, while adding church revitalization and leadership training as central ministries. He launched the Embers to a Flame Conference on Church Revitalization, the Today in Perspective radio program and podcast, the Fresh Bread daily devotional, and Conversations with Harry, and he authored Embers to a Flame and 3D Leadership. He served on the boards of Westminster Theological Seminary and Birmingham Theological Seminary, taught regularly for both, and partnered with the Gospel Reformation Network, the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals, and Ligonier Ministries.
A passionate student of history, a devoted shepherd of Christ's flock, and a tireless mentor to younger pastors, Dr. Reeder lived out his deepest desire — to be poured out as a drink offering for the sake of the gospel. On May 18, 2023, he was called home to be with the Lord following a car accident while returning from leading a prayer breakfast at the Alabama State Capitol, where he had challenged lawmakers to lead according to God's Word. He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Cindy; his three children, Jennifer (Philip) Toomer-Hay, Ike (Angie) Reeder, and Abigail (Ryan) Leib; his sister, Beth (Robert) Thomas; and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and spiritual sons and daughters across the globe.
He fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith. Soli Deo gloria.
